A belated garlic post

This fall, our nice days stayed nice well into late October. This is the excuse I’m making for getting my garlic in the ground a bit later than I had planned. Last year I planted in October and that timing was great–scapes arrived in June and the garlic was ready to harvest in July. This year, I didn’t get around to cleaning out my garden and preparing it for planting until mid-November. Fingers crossed this wasn’t a huge error on my part!

I’m growing a soft neck variety called Nootka Rose from High Mowing seeds, which has significantly more individual cloves than the hard neck variety I grew last year. For reference, last year I planted Music garlic and had 27 plants. This yielded garlic that is lasting us well into the winter with several bulbs still drying on our “root cellar” (which is really just a dark area of my husband’s man cave basement). This year I needed to devote an entire 12 by 4 bed to 120 potential garlic plants. If these are as successful as last year, I see a lot of roasted garlic in our future!
